TX Triple-P

  • Goal, Need, Response: The goal of the TX Triple-P (Plant Phenology Project) is to teach participants about the basics of plant identification, their seasonal changes (phenology), and their ecological value. The project initiation was launched in response to a 2022 survey of TX A&M AgriLife Extension faculty and staff involved in youth plant identification contests. The survey revealed a notable decline in youth participation and highlighted a clear need for improved educational tools to support plant identification instruction. In response, Dr. Stacy L. Hines assembled a team of experts to develop innovative educational materials that reduce barriers to learning and provide stronger support for plant identification instruction centered on the Master Plant List, the reference guide for youth plant identification contests in Texas.
  • Innovative, Science-Based Education: Current plant identification resources often rely on technical jargon and rarely explain how to distinguish plants from common look-alikes, making identification difficult for individuals without a background in botany. The TX Triple-P curriculum addresses these barriers in three key ways. First, TX Triple-P teaches a simple three-step process for plant identification. Second, it presents the key defining characteristics of each plant in clear, accessible language to help users identify plants accurately. Third, it explains how to distinguish each plant from common look-alikes in Texas, improving both confidence and accuracy in plant identification.
